Craigslist Scammer: Merry Jack

Well, I get to go through the whole scammer thing on Craigslist because I have a few items to sell. One item I think attracted the scammers because it is a kiln for $500. Scammer like those big numbers because they can rip their victims off for more money.

Fortunately for me, I saw it was a scam immediately, even though his first didn't say much. And I knew I wanted to blog about the whole back and forth and put him on the Internet so here goes... I'll keep adding to this until he realizes I know and moves on to greener scam pastures.

Notice how he put this weird thing at the bottom of his email to make it look like it was contacting me from his DROID, but then the phone number wasn't even properly falsified. Gads. Scammers are dumb. And they STILL make so much money. Baffles the mind.

First Email from my scammer:

Hello

is the above item still for sale?

Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID

I noticed the FROM and the REPLY-TO were different emails. Also a sign of a scammer. Just for grins, because I like to mess with them, I replied to both email addresses and in the body of the email (and the subject line), I removed all references to what the item was and will see what the scammer does with that.

Oh, they reply to *thousands* of sellers on Craigslist so they may just move on, but I had to see.

Second Reply (of course he ignored that he had no idea which item I am selling):

So I wrote back and told him he would need to overnight the check (I want him to lose a little money at least) but then I didn't provide him my address. I want to waste more of his time first.

To be continued....

  1. No further word from Merry Jack, so fr. Guess he didn't want to spend the money on overnighting the counterfeit check. There are probably too many other victims on Craigslist who will fall for the scam and not ask the check be overnighted. I tried.

Here is another scammer reply I got on the same ad (the FROM and REPLY-TO being different usually gives it away):

  2. Well I got a few more CL scammer emails for you:

wallinsino02@gmail.com - "is the above item still for sale?".. this is the guy you have

Wayne Gretzky" " - "How long have you been using it??"... in bold and italic... I guess that made it seem more impressive, though the famous hockey player looking for a used dishwasher was a long shot.

"sherrie_allen@bellsouth.net" - "I saw your posted advert on craiglist, i am really interested and i would like you to get back to me if it's still available...
Thanks..." - Using Bell south for a woman's email is always a good idea... Bell of the south or such, she sounds nice but it is a shame she is a scammer.

"micollin12@gmail.com" - "I came across your ad on CL, get back to me if its still available asap." - He actual put a name in there "Michael" sounds like a rugged individual with Irish heritage, scorned during Middle school, but trying to bounce back now, hoping above all hope HE will be able to get a nice used dishwasher.

keyshiacriag2@gmail.com - "ARE YOU THE DIRECT SELLER?" - I almost replied to keyshia, because I had to think twice... why would she be asking this if she were not serious about the dishwasher and or negotiations about it, but then I realized i put in my ad to include your phone number, so I did not hit send.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

This guy has got to be stopped, especially that last part. I'm an atheist, so God or Jesus means nothing to me personally, but there are a shitload of people out there who will sympathize with his religious words and use them to justify giving this scam-artist their information. Screw this guy and everything he loves.

The guy then created fake paypal e-mails saying there is a payment confirmation (services@usa.com) & (groupcompans@blumail.org) and that all I needed to do for the payment to go through is ship the item and the tracking number would release the funds.

Here is his other e-mail responses:

Thank you for your email.I want to let you know that i have sent the payment and i hope paypal have confirmed it.The money have already been deducted from my Paypal account.Check your paypal email now, as soon as paypal contacts you with the confirmation of my payment, go and send my Friend the package via United Parcel Service (UPS) post office OR (FedEx), make it Overnight Delivery and insure the package.. His last e-mail i had asked him why the money wasn't in my paypal account. His response:

I got your mail dude, I didn't purposely did' t that way, Paypal did. I check online now, sending the item to chicago won't cost more that $20 - $30 considering the grand weight of the iPhone 4 and accessories. You can fix the shipping and your account will be credited immediately. Mind you its a pending payment so as soon as you provide them with the item tracking number they will release you money. They are doing all that to protect both buyer and seller. Update me with the tracking number and please try and send it before the day runs out. Thanks for your time..

  10. I am so grateful to all of you for the opportunity to see what's going on. I received an email, in response to a Craigslist posting for furniture from elizebeth987454@gmail.com ... and it is word for word what most of you received. I sensed something was wrong ... and wrote to Craigslist, though I have not heard back from them. I'm glad all the red flags went up in my brain.

Other than reporting it to Craigslist, how do you recommend I deal with this ... (omitting my choice of words)?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Not much you can do. I think reporting it to Craigslist and posting their email and name online here so it shows up in searches for other people is about all we can do. I guess the best goal is to help people NOT fall for these in the first place, because I don't imagine these cockroaches will ever go away. They just change up names and email accounts and just keep going...

  13. Thank you for posting these e-mails. Makes it very helpful when dealing with unscrupulous people. This guy has been e-mailing about a car and his wording is spot on to what all of you have been getting. Below is his latest.

I just received the confirmation from my secretary that the payment has been issued and mailed out to you using FedEx ground delivery service, hopefully will be delivered to your address within 3-4 business days, but to my greatest surprise the check was issued out in the sum of $1850.25 instead of the actual cost of my purchase. She claimed that I requested for that amount to be issued out to you but am very sure I only made a request for just the cost of my purchase. I know this a terrible mistake and I was just informed about this few moment ago.

Please once the check is delivered, kindly take it to your Bank and have it deposited into your account for 24hours to clear, when it clears the next day you can then have the remaining balance sent to my mover via MoneyGram at any Walmart or CVS after deducting the cost of the purchase as I've already planned in using the excess funds to offset her previous bills so that she can come over for the pick up ASAP. I will need your response assuring me that I can trust you to handle this appropriately as requested. I'm very sorry for the inconveniences and I have decided to add $50 to cover the cost of your running around to the Bank and Walmart store, thank you for the understanding and hope to read from you shortly.

    1. Good for you! Homeland security... yeah - right. And scammers are trying to trick sellers who think using PayPal is safe. It is not. Here is how the scammers are doing it. They ask for an invoice to be sent to their disposable email account (it's always something like live.com or gmail.com, or yahoo.com) and that way they can control how the scam flows. Once you send them an invoice, they have a lot of the information they need to create a bogus email that looks like it has come from paypal and says the payment has been made. But it hasn't. It is a fake email. It's terrible how many victims fall at this step - they never take the time to manually log in to their paypal (never do it from clicking on a link in the email, those links have been faked too) and seeing if money was really sent. You'll quickly find out it hasn't been. But they get enough victims to move forward before checking and wire money to them that this twist on the scam is becoming very popular with scammer.

Anytime I get a confirmation that I've received PayPal monies, I ALWAYS open a new browser, type in paypal.com and log into my account and see what has occurred.

Also, and I always say this and I always will - this whole fake buyer scam relies ENTIRELY on people being willing to wire money. NO WIRE TRANSFERS. Period. That would stop this scam dead in it's tracks.

  40. Just recently tried using Craigslist for the first time. Was trying to sell a few antiques and some collectibles. I receive so many of these type of emails thru Craigslist that I now consider it virtually worthless as a tool to sell merchandise. I just got 2 emails from "Grant Edwards" and found this blog by googleing his name. Oh well! Placing small inexpensive ads in local newspapers are more effective to me. Thanks for posting the info on "Mr Edwards."

  41. Had the exact same request from Homeland Security guy, Don. Luckily I got suspicious and found your writeups. Thanks

  44. Trying to sell a Curio cabinet for 250.00. I get a response from a Royal Paul. He sent, what looks like a cashiers check for 2500.00. He wants me to cash it at my bank, take out the money for the curio and an extra 50.00 and the rest pay the drivers who will come buy to pick up the curio. We have the 2500. check in hand, of course we will not cash or deposit it, but what do we do with it? Can't this be reported to some one? I'm new to craig's list.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You can take the check to the bank and ask if they do anything with counterfeit checks. If they sent it via USPS (most scammers don't), it is mail fraud and a crime so you can report it to your local Postal Inspector. Most scammers use FedEx to avoid this.

What's important, though, is that you did NOT lose money and the scammer will get nothing from you.

I think Craigslist is over-run with scammers, but you just have to know how to identify their emails from legitimate people. I've noticed legitimate people have been putting their local phone number with their name in their emails to response to an ad on craigslist. One would have to look that number up or call it to know if it matched their name, but its a start. Once scammers figure out that is what real people are doing, I'm sure they will put in fake phone numbers. But again, that's easy enough to verify.

I use craigslist. But very carefully. And I know most responses to my ad are going to be scammers, mixed in with a few real responses.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you very much. The check was sent Fed x. I wish there was a way to turn this around on the scammers.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Believe me, I wish there was a way, too! it is why I started this whole effort of exposing them on the internet and finding ways to alert people before they lose any money.

They are like cockroaches. We can't eradicate them. But we can keep sharing online and making their crimes harder to succeed at. We can keep warning each other.

Thanks for writing in and sharing your experiences.

  48. I got a similar e-mail today from a "Shubay Rich" and did in fact give him my address and full name for the certified check, against my reservations. Should I be concerned?

    ReplyDelete
  49. No, I don't think anything bad will come of that. Once you get the check, you can turn it into your bank saying you know it is fraudulent. Banks don't often do much but you can try there first.

The important thing now is DO NOT forward any of your money via wire transfer to ANYONE. That is how the scam works.

You have no obligations to response or communicate with this scammer any further. Just ignore all further emails and the scammer will go away. They are playing a numbers game and they have to move on to other people they can potentially trick into sending them money.

  50. This person is still at it. I got an email from a craigslist AD this week, with the same email address. I am not worried abut giving out my address because I am a registered and I sent him an estimate for work to be done on 4 laptops. Why would I have to send my contact info in an email when it is already on my estimate.....dumb. And why would anyone ship laptops back and forth to get repairs that could be done in their city.

One must be diligent when transacting business and follow up with a little basic investigation.

  51. My brother put an ad on Craig's list and got an immedite response from a John Mark. He emailed saying he would buy my brother's handicapped vehicle sight unseen. My brother got an email from PayPal saying that John had put the money plus $600 that he should wire to the person that will be transporting the van out of state. My brother wired the money and then he got another email from PayPal saying that $900 was put in the account and for my brother to get insurance. Now we all know that the purchaser is the person to get the insurance. When he emailed Mark he told my brother that the woman never got the wire. My brother has proof from Western Union that she picked up the money. Is this another scan of the same John Mark?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ouch. Super ouch. I hate to hear when scammers succeed at their scams. Breaks my heart. Yes, that is a scammer at the other end and that money is gone. Your brother can now report it as a crime but it is usually for the sake of reporting and not to get his money back (which rarely happens).

This is why I feel wiring money is something that people just need to stop doing. Scammers NEED wire transfers in order to cleanly steal the money and get away without a trace.

Often these Paypal emails are faked to look like they are coming from Paypal when no money has been deposited at all. Did your brother manually go into his paypal account and see? Even then, the scammer can reverse the payment.

Time to report this one as a crime - the police, to paypal, to ic3.gov.

  56. Hi all. This page is very helpful in realizing a scam before one gets too deep into thinking the item was sold. The item, on Craigslist, was for 1,000 books $450). I began to reply when I decided to do a search of his email address and it came up here. Here's his note:

    Hi
Do you still have it for sale ?And how much are you willing to go down to? Kindly cc/forward your response to my work email at " omo.amigos400@gmail.com " i will reply right away. Thanks

  57. OK, I also owe you guys one. A different item I have on Craigslist. I get a text from a scammer calling from
613-917-8324 asking me what my best price for the item. I texted him back my best price, then I googled his phone number. On another scammer alert page I read that he is a scammer. A few minutes later I get another text about the whole money order scam where he would send a money order, then send over his "movers" to pick up the item. He would send extra money for me to give to his movers when they come to pick up the item. So, I texted him back a message that says "go f..k yourself." Thanks to all for all thier help.

  58. Y'all will get a kick out of this one. The conversation was via text from the (707) 877-6893 number a few others have referenced here.

From 7078776893: is it still available?2004 PT Cruiser - $6000 (Birmingham)

From 708776893: Thank you for the response, I will be happy to buy it, but I am at the plane duty at this moment that why i can not call u but i can text.am a plane engineer and i really want to make this purchase and i will appreciate if you can sale it for me because due to my work i can not search for another item like this right now. Note that you will not be responsible for shipping and handling. The pick up

Reply: It would probably be a lot more convenient for you if a conversation was held over the phone as opposed to via text. So if you want to call some other time I'd be happy to help

  59. I just had someone from that same number (707-877-6893) attempting to scam me. I listed a $500 computer, he asked to pay with paypal and ship it overseas to his son. Right in the listing I state cash only, local pickup only. I wasn't fooled, but googled the # out of curiosity, and it returned this blog. Thanks for your work. :)

I googled the number to find this page and that he was a scammer, His email states he's interested in my car and I am to text him only no calls!! He is using the name Drew Honderich with the (707)-877-6893 number. My husband decided to text him to see how far he can take this before the guy backs off. My car also says "locals only no paypal or western union" since they seem to love using those.

  62. One for us too. My husband advertised a clarinet on Craig's List. Got an E-mail from Lisa Smith. We got them to send their check. It was a fake check from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign University Payables. Drawn from Bank of New York-Mellon Pittsburgh PA.It was sent to us through USPS. Then the texts started. Saying they can see by the tracking number we have received the check so hurry and get to your bank and send us the balance through western union. Texts came from 360 437-6566 and 321 345-7145.. They were even stupid enough to send a E-mail mentioning a puppy. Wrong scam! Im also including as much info as possible so anyone else that searches will see this!

  65. Drew Honderich just contacted me off craigslist offering to buy my motorcycle! His wording seemed suspicious so I google'd the name and found this blog. Thanks for posting on this scammer!! This happens way too much. Almost every time I advertise anything over a few hundred dollars I get a few bs contacts. Always watch out for anyone saying they are out of the country or can't meet in person. Never believe anyone who says they will mail a check. Never give any PayPal info. etc.. Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I received an email from Drew Honderich today with the message, "Hello, Do you still have this for sale>>>> ". Instead of checking online first for a scam I replied with my mobile number, and he texted me from the number 203-528-0323 with text, "I mailed you earlier as regards your [exact-verbiage-from-craigslist-ad] , i hope i have the right number". I then decided to check online for the number. Whitepages.com shows the number as a VOIP number in Connecticut. Then I googled the name and found these entries. I then replied to the text and mentioned contacting law enforcement if he was scamming me. No response yet.

Thanks for the blogger, and for everyone who has posted info here.
