Internet Scam: Fake Job Employment Scam

Given so many people are out of work and/or need extra money, this scam really has seen a spike in victims. There are many variations and I'll post examples as I run across them, but typically the fake job opening is for a "payroll processor" or "shipping assistant" or "mystery shopper". The goal is to get the victim to either receive goods (which are stolen using a stolen credit card) and re-ship them elsewhere (and so the victim is now criminally handling and moving stolen goods) or they may just want the victim to move counterfeit money orders or money stolen from other victims who have taken the fake money orders as real and then sent their real money. Often the "employers" (i.e. scammers) will use the victim right up until the victim is expecting to be paid for their work, and then the scammer will dump them and get another victim to move stuff for them.

Scammers also use this scam for Identity Theft, if the victim has given up a lot of sensitive personal information, thinking they are giving it to an employer.

Here is a newsclip that is hard to believe the woman did not know she was doing something wrong. The scammers usually don't get the victim to actually *produce* the counterfeit money orders, just move them around.

BUFFALO -- The wife of the Buffalo Common Council's majority leader has avoided prison but must pay $20,000 in restitution for her role in a counterfeit check scheme.

Jayme Smith was sentenced in federal court in Buffalo Monday after pleading guilty in April to bank fraud. The wife of Common Council Majority Leader Demone Smith could have gotten up to three years in prison, but received two years of supervised released.

Smith's lawyer says Smith was the victim of Internet scammers who steered her to create counterfeit checks from her home computer and mail them to various people after she responded to a Craigslist ad for a payroll-processing clerk.

Smith told the judge she never intended to commit a crime.

  1. Here's a fake employment scam where the scammers used the checking cashing strategy rather than the re-shipping of goods approach. Still, you can see how lucrative these scams are.

    Nanny Scam

A 26-year-old Tecumseh woman had sought employment on a "nanny wanted" website. She was contacted by email by a woman who sent her a check June 14 with instructions to cash it and send the money to a third party in Kentucky.

Five days later, the victim was told by her bank that the check was a fake and that her account was being debited $2,250. The investigation continues, but Tecumseh police officials said there was not much they could do at this point.

I'll keep repeating myself to keep spreading the word. Do NOT wire anyone money. Period! Scammers can not disappear with your money if you just decide no wire transfers for people we don't know that we connected with online. In fact, you'd do better just to give up using wire transfers (like Western Union or MoneyGram) for *anything*.

  6. I received the same email and an order was placed by this person for two works of art, and a check was sent. Then came an email wanting me to send money to this parties shipper. I immediately checked online and found this scam and am now going to report to the authorities. Thank goodness I caught this before any of the funds from the fraudulent check were spent. Important to let other artists, especially those of us who are just getting into internet sales, know about these kinds of things. John

  7. Hello,

Good morning. I ended up on your site. I thought maybe to add to the already long list of emails. This one seems different in the body of the email itself. It's not requesting pieces of art work from me. However, they are asking ME to do the purchasing on their behalf. I had originally sent an email to a job posting online for something completely different. The original email I sent was to an email that was different, same with the person's names. Which made me question in a blink. I'm not an artist per say but I paint and it's sh**ty there's people stealing your work. As if taking money from your account. Hope this helps. ---Btw it was on Craigslist for a "waitress" position---
    -Happy New Years. :•)

    Thanks,
    Ev
